Ballet lessons are run on campus by a South Africa Dance company. Children as from 2.5 years old are taught light, graceful movements and the use of ballet shoes to reinforce toes. Every year in June/July, an examiner from the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) in London flies to Mauritius to assess the students who also perform at our annual Dukesbridge Games for the parents.
Swimming lessons can start as young as 2.5 years of age, subject to the coach assessment. Lessons are held offsite in Helvetia and in Piton, North. Parents can choose the school van service or transport their child directly to the pool. There is usually an assessment at the end of each term. During the Winter months, only the indoor pool in the North will be used for swimming lessons.
Notwithstanding the self-defence skills it brings, Karaté instills many life lessons, discipline and overall physical and mental wellness in a child. The lessons are delivered on campus by the representative of the International Federation of Karaté (IFK) in Mauritius for 30-40 minutes every week. Students are graded each year and upgrade to the next belt depending on their performance.
Weekly sessions conducted on campus by the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy give children aged 3+ opportunities to enjoy the experience on stage. Through a series of exercises, children develop self-confidence, their expressive abilities and role-play techniques. At the end of the term, they receive a certificate of participation.
Coding is the language of the future! Robotics lessons are conducted after-school hours at our Primary school for children aged 5+ who learn about complex topics in the fields of physics, engineering and programming. Through robot building and manipulating their movements using an iPAD, children develop motor and cognitive skills.
Learning the proper gymnastic techniques from a professional Czech trainer enhances motor learning, physical response and upper and lower body core strength. Lessons are centrally conducted at our Trianon campus on Saturday mornings in two groups: pre-primary age and primary age.
In a small group setting after school hours, children aged 3+ are exposed to books starting from picture reading to actual reading using a mix of phonics and sight words. This 30-40mins weekly session is highly recommended for children who would like to be further exposed to the English language and to master their reading skills.
French tutoring is for students who need just that little bit more encouragement in French language, particularly expat students who are not exposed to French at home. For 30-40 minutes once per week after school hours, the tutor takes a group of 3-5 children aged 3+ to follow their progress closely.
Football can be physically demanding and lessons for children aged 3+ help improve their speed, agility, strength, hand-eye coordination and overall cardiovascular endurance. Lessons are conducted on Saturday mornings at Trianon campus by a well regarded coach in Mauritian scene for both beginner and intermediate levels.
There’s no doubt about it: the best time to learn languages is during the early childhood phase when the brain is still developing. Spanish, being the second most spoken language in the world, is a plus in the business world. Our native speaker from Colombia provides Spanish lessons in the afternoon for a small group of students on campus.
Every afternoon, an account of what a child's class has covered is published along with some pictures. This tool enables the parents to follow the activities being done at school on a daily basis and engage with their child at home accordingly.
OASIS is the main platform where Dukesbridge memos, various announcements and FAQs for our events are published throughout the year. As per our Terms and Conditions, parents are required to regularly check the online portal for what is coming up.
OASIS is the place where one can access documents made available to parents such as the Termly lunch menu, schedule for holiday clubs, list of extracurricular activities, school Terms and Conditions, new fees published every August etc.
OASIS has a messenger service which parents can use to communicate with the team, for example a request to administer medication. Through OASIS, the team sends parents accident, incident and lunch reports where any such occurrence applies.
Build a school, change a nation
Launched in 2014, Dukesbridge is the largest chain of private schools in Mauritius with a growing presence in East Africa. The English-medium school is religious-neutral and caters for children aged 1-11 with plans to extend into secondary education. Through its holistic approach to education, Dukesbridge's focus is to develop confident, smart and cultured all-rounder individuals ready to take on the world.
Dukesbridge believes in teaching happiness which it considers fundamental to stimulate engagement and learning. The preschool uses an Australian pedagogy with elements of Montessori adapted for the local context. The primary school follows the British/Australian national curriculum except for French which follows the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) programme.
Parent Teacher Interviews (PTIs) are held three times a year. They provide parents the chance to sit down individually with the teacher for a progress update on their child’s performance at the end of each term. School is closed for the day and all campuses gather in our central location with the opportunity to provide feedback after their interviews, rate the teachers and meet with senior management.
We put a lot of effort into our events as they represent milestones for students and teachers to work hard towards and, in doing so, acquire real life skills. In Term 1, we celebrate the national days of Mauritius and Australia and the term ends with an outing for each age group. During Term 2, students build their physical stamina for the Dukesbridge Games. Term 3 ends with an epic Musical production.
